Saltverk is located at the tip of the narrow Reykjanes peninsula between two fjords, housed in an unassuming building. The rising steam is a giveaway. Inside, seawater slowly evaporates with the help of geothermal energy from a spring just a stone's throw away. While Saltverk's diverse offerings reflect today's gourmet tastes, the history of sea salt production in this region dates back to the 1770s. The Danish king founded a salt mill in Reykjanes, which operated until the devastating eruption of the Laki crater volcano in 1783. 2011 Saltverk was founded and re-established salt production in Iceland.
